Frequently Asked Questions

What is a “Registered Dietitian” and why should I see one?

A “Registered Dietitian” (RD) or “Registered Dietitian Nutritionist” (RDN) has completed a Bachelor’s of Science degree (minimum) in Dietetics from an accredited university, as well as a thorough and competitive Dietetic Internship Program, gaining over 1,200 hours of training and experience. A RD must also pass a national registration exam, and then stay current and up-to-date with the latest practice and research by completing 75 hours of continuing education every five years.

RD’s are trained in compassionate nutrition counseling and behavior change therapy and are governed by a Code of Ethics determined by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. We are trained to provide evidence-based nutrition care based on nutrition science and the latest research.

Are you therapists? What is nutrition counseling?

Although we provide nutrition counseling through medical nutrition therapy, we are not licensed therapists. Nutrition counseling allows us to provide a nutrition care plan that is tailored to each of our client’s individual needs. During our sessions, we will spend a good amount of time getting to know you and what your needs and desires are for your time with us. We avoid offering advice that is not relevant to you, your health, and your unique situation. If you are seeking help for an eating disorder and/or find there are deeper challenges related to your relationship with food, a synergistic approach using both a dietitian and experienced therapist (individual and/or family) can do wonders! We work closely with a number of excellent therapists and counselors we are happy to you to.

What is intuitive eating?

Intuitive eating is a nutrition philosophy that we often use at Vibrant Hope Nutrition & Wellness. Based on the book, “Intuitive Eating” by Evelyn Tribole, MS, RD, and Elyse Resch, MS, RD, FADA, CEDRD, Intuitive Eating is a non-diet approach to health and wellness that helps you tune into your body signals, break the cycle of chronic dieting, and heal your relationship with food. In short: intuitive eating is normal eating. From a nutrition professional perspective, Intuitive Eating is a framework that helps us keep nutrition interventions behavior-focused instead of restrictive or rule-focused.

What is “Telehealth” or “virtual sessions” and how does it work for nutrition counseling?

Telehealth is a safe and secure form of telecommunication that allows one to have “virtual” video sessions from their phone or computer in the comfort of their own home or office! Each session uses a unique link that provides a secure connection every time. Telehealth sessions are the same rate as in-person sessions and allow for flexibility during travel, illness, long-distance, and/or simple convenience!

Jennifer – Food Freedom RD – offers In-Person in Highlands Ranch and Virtual

Allison – Root Cause RD- offers Virtual/Telehealth

Brookelyn – Integrative Women’s Health Advocate – offers Virtual/Telehealth

How long does each session last and how long do I need to work with an RD to accomplish my goals?

We take a highly individualized approach because everyone’s situation and goals are unique. Traditionally we recommend at minimum a 90-minute intake followed by a one-hour session the following week. Most clients benefit from weekly sessions (30–60 min each) for several months for optimal results but of course, this varies per situation. We will help you determine this based on your goals and budget!

Since you offer faith-based counseling services, do I need to be a person of faith to work with you?

No! We offer this option only to those who want this and find it an important part of their recovery. We respect and work with people of all backgrounds, identities, and religions!

I am currently working with a therapist/doctor, will you communicate with them for continuity of care?

Yes! We highly value this collaborative effort and know how important this is! Please be sure to fill out the Release of Information form for our records.

Do you work with children?

Yes! Allison Grooms, RD is our child specialist, and Jennifer Anderson, RD works with children over 13 years old, with eating disorders and children under 13 years old on a case-by-case basis! Allison works with kiddos of all ages from breastfeeding and starting solids, to toddlers, all the way through adolescence.
